MR. BIG について
今日紹介するのはミスタービッグというバンドです。
ボーカルはエリック・マーティンという人で甘い声の持ち主です。日本好きの外人として有名で。日本の歌をたくさんカバーしていてカバーアルバムもソロで出しています。
ポール・ギルバートという凄腕ギタリストがいるバンドで一時解散していましたが最近ちょくちょく活動しているバンドです。
わたくしは中学から高校時代このポール・ギルバートが好きすぎて良くフレーズを何度も練習した記憶があります。
ギターも英語の勉強も同じです。とにかう何度も何度も同じフレーズを繰り返し練習して自分のものに出来たら完成です。いきなり新しい曲を聴いてすぐにギターが弾けたらプロですやん！なのでみんなはまだ見習いです。なので、英語を何度も何度も同じフレーズをしっかり覚えて、このthatは同格だ！このallowは5文型だとかしっかりとパターンをつかんでくださいね。

和訳と文法
Here I sit halfway to somewhere
「僕はここではないどこかへの行く途中に座り込んでしまった」
Thinking about what's in front of me and what I left behind
「僕のこの向かう先に何があるのか、そして僕の背後には何があるのかを考える」
On my own, supposed to be so easy
「自分一人では簡単なはずだったのに」
Is this what I've been after
「これが僕を追ってきたものなのか」
→先ほどのwhatは疑問視で取りましたが、今回のwhatは先行詞を含む関係代名詞のwhatになります。＝the thing（s）whichです。訳は「こと、もの」通称ことものwhatですね。

「あるいは、僕が正気さを失ってしまったのか」
Maybe this is my chance and it's coming to take me away, yeah
「ひょっとしたらこれはチャンスで僕を連れ出しに来たのかもしれないね」

→形容詞enough to do
to doするほど形容詞 または、とても形容詞なのでto doすの2パターンで訳せます。
Smart enough to come in out of the rain?
「現実を直視できるほど賢いだろうか？」
→come in out of the rain 「分別がある，現実を直視する」
元々直訳では直訳：「雨が降っている外から中に入って来る」これは英語の慣用句の表現ですね。
→smartは「ずる賢い・高性能の」という意味で形容詞です。スマートフォンやスマートな性格などは全部この単語です。もちろんスマートで痩せていると訳す場合もありますが。入試では「ずる賢い・高性能の」が多いです。

「もしくは僕は風が吹く場所に向かうバカなのか？」
英語の練習の仕方。
例えば下の例文があればこういう風に練習してみましょう。
Anyone / who makes it his life work [to help other people] / may come to believe / that they cannot get along / without him / and may not want to hear evidence [that they can , too often, stand on their own feet.]
ステップⅠ
先ずは、英語→日本語で音読します。その際に文法事項や（ ）のような返し読みを入れて呟いていくのがコツ
主語は最初の名詞なので Anyone 「どんな人もが...」が主語。（どんな人？） who makes it his life work 「を生涯の仕事としているどんな人もが... 」may come to believe「信じるようになるかもしれない」（何を？…目的語を作る名詞説のthat）that they cannot get along 「彼らはやっていけないと」…という感じでやってください。
ステップⅡ （TOEICリーディング6０％を超えだしたらいきなりここから）
Anyone / who makes it his life work [to help other people]「トゥーヘルプアザーピープルをヒズライフワークにしているエニワンが」may come to believe「メイカムトゥービリーブするようになるかもしれない」that they cannot get along 「ザットゼイカンノットゲットアロングを」
というように日本語の割合を減らしましょう。
英文を読むとき意識的に返し読みをやってますか？（どんな人？）（何を？…目的語を作る名詞説のthat）
返し読みが出来れば熟語の穴埋めや並び替えに強くなるほか。
「なにを」「なんの」「なぜか」「なにによって」と自分で突っ込むことで音読練習の中で前置詞の穴埋問題などに強くなれますし、thatが何なのか過去分詞や現在分詞がどんな働きをするのかが分かってくるとおもいます。
また英語日本語を繰り返す事によって英語のまとまったフレーズが出てきやすくなるので、TOEIC対策でも、もちろん大学入試でも使えます。
